Laravel provides all the tools necessary to build top-notch modern PHP apps. With Laravel’s built-in features like routing, controllers, database tools, authentication system, and the whole ecosystem, developers can develop any app or website from scratch, even something as complicated as a marketplace API.

However, when an app grows and developers have more and more features to implement, they may find themselves spending more time writing functions that are not specific to their app than writing their own application logic.

Laravel has several neat tricks to let developers focus on a unique part of the problem that application is supposed to solve. The three most useful are custom helpers, middleware, and REST API. Let’s see what makes them so great!.

Creating Reusable Laravel Helpers

One place where we tend to create extra work by repeating code a lot is in small operations.

For instance, developers can make a helper with functions for formatting dates, converting values, generating display text, or performing other small tasks that are used throughout the application.

By using a custom helper, developers can put this logic in a single, reusable place. A practical guide on how to create a custom helper in Laravel shows how to create a helper file and add it to the composer autoload so that it is available in all parts of the application. This way, developers can keep all the repeated logic in one single file.

Processing Requests with Middleware

Another important aspect of the architecture of a Laravel application is middleware. Laravel middleware gives developers the ability to filter incoming HTTP requests to the application. They allow one to perform logic before a request is handled by the application's controller and alter the resulting response before it is sent back to the client.

Because of this, middleware can be used to implement a variety of functions, such as authentication, authorization, logging, request filtering, and more.

For instance, an API may require clients to send an authorization token with each request. Instead of implementing the token validation logic in each API controller, a middleware can be written to validate the token before responding to any request.

Developers can follow a practical tutorial on creating and registering Laravel middleware to see how custom middleware can be created and used for API request authentication.

Building a REST API in Laravel

As applications grow in complexity and interconnectivity, APIs have become an essential part of modern development. A Laravel application probably needs to expose some data through an API to a JavaScript frontend, mobile application, third-party service, or even another backend system.

A REST API offers a standard way for clients to interact with application resources over HTTP methods such as GET, POST, PATCH, and DELETE. Laravel provides tools for developing these APIs, including controllers, route definitions, validation, API resources, and middleware.

A useful guide for building a REST API in Laravel shows how to create an API around a model, migration, resource, controller, and API routes, and how to use middleware to protect API requests.

Explore More Laravel and PHP Techniques

The techniques discussed in this article are part of a much broader PHP development ecosystem. As a Laravel application becomes more sophisticated, developers may need to explore additional topics such as database optimization, authentication, validation, queues, events, testing, file handling, and integration with third-party services.

Exploring more Laravel development tutorials and examples can provide useful context for understanding how different Laravel features can be applied to real-world applications. Developers can also benefit from reviewing broader PHP development resources, particularly when a Laravel project requires knowledge of the underlying language and its core features.
